2019 Bond Projects and Gym Seismic Rehabilitation Grant

Thanks Union voters!

In November 2019, the Union Community passed a $4 million General Obligation Bond to improve safety, efficiency, accessibility, and to upgrade facilities. The District also received a $4 million state grant from the Oregon School Capital Improvement Matching (OSCIM) program, and a $20,000 Preserving Oregon grant from the Oregon State Historic Preservation office to clean and repoint the High School masonry. Additionally an ESSER Grant will fund HVAC improvements. These resources bring the bond project total to approximately $9 million.

Following bond passage in November 2019, the bond project design process and planning occurred throughout 2020. The project was permitted and bid in early 2021 with construction beginning on exterior spaces in April 2021. Campus has been closed during Summer 2021 for construction. Smaller wrap-up bond construction work will occur during Summer 2022 in conjunction with the Gym Seismic Rehabilitation construction.

The bond project is a renovation project inclusive of:

  • Accessibility upgrades including an elevator to serve the High School, accessible entry ramp at the Gymnasium, restroom remodels

  • HVAC replacement for all buildings

  • Electrical service upgrades

  • Safety and security upgrades including secure vestibules at the High School and Miller Elementary

  • Restoring the use of the historic main entry at the High School

  • New parking lot and drop-off area at Miller Elementary with a new entrance facing Main Street.

  • Gymnasium entry addition

  • Expanded gym and multi-purpose space in Miller Elementary

  • New roof and windows in JF Hutchinson Elementary

  • Interior and exterior painting of buildings

  • Cleaning and re-pointing of masonry at the High School, rebuilding main entry lower stairs

  • Commons area in Union High School for student gathering

Union School District is proud to have many local subcontractors and suppliers working on the bond project! Union and Baker County subcontractors include: James Challis Construction, Cross L Welding, Wilson Cabinets, 4 Seasons Insulation, Carpet One, Brooks Painting, Air Fuzion, All Phase Electric, Alpine Alarm, Damschen Drywall, Steve Lindley Contracting, and Miller's Lumber Supply.
